The planning of the work to be developed was divided in the following steps:

  • Review Literature (4 weeks):

    • Protection Scheme on a smart grid context;

  • Analysis of the impact of integration of Distributed Generation into the Distribution System (3,5 weeks):

    • Analysis of the impact of DG into Distribution System Protection;

    • Definition of the settings used on MV Distribution System Protection;

    • Mathematical prove of protection issues on the Distribution System Protection with Distributed Generation.

  • Real time simulation of a protection issue due to high penetration of generation into the network (3 weeks):

    • Adjustement to RTDS Simulator FEUP;

    • Simulation a case scenario of a protection problem.

  • Development of an architecture of adaptive protection suitable for Distribution Network with Distributed Generation (5 weeks):

    • That guarantees the protective relay selectivity;

    • Enhance the availability of the DG units during and after the faults;

    • Make use of redundant communication infrastructure, standard communication protocols, and multi-functional relays.

  • Apply the developed architecture to a case scenario (1.5 weeks):

    • Simulation on RTDS Simulator FEUP.

  • Writing-up the dissertation and a conference paper (5 weeks).
